Jinche Orchids Park
The founder of Jinche Company (the owner of the famous Mr. Brown Coffee) is from Yilan and is a great admirer of orchids. Not too long ago, he built a state-of-the-art greenhouse in Yilan. As a result, over one million orchids bloom here every year thanks in part to the innovative greenhouse and agreeable weather.
Orchids grown here are known for their health and beauty and attract admirers from the world over. Ninety percent of the orchids grown in this park are exported to Japan, where they are admired for their size, smell, and beauty. The park is the biggest in northern Taiwan and contains a research laboratory for genetic analysis. Plans are underway to create an orchid museum and an educational facility.

Dahu Scenic Area
Dahu, which means “big lake” in Mandarin, is shaped like a giant swan. The lake stretches 200 meters from top to bottom and 400 meters across at its widest point. One unique characteristic of the lake is that its water changes color every season: spring, green; summer, yellow; autumn, gray; winter, blue. Lush green vegetation surrounds the lake making it an ideal migration point for various types of exotic birds. Fishing is permitted at the lake, and visitors are invited to take leisurely strolls around the scenic perimeter.
Yuanshang Park
Yuanshan Township is located on the Western portion of the Lanyang Plain. It got its name because of a small round hill that divides the area. Today the Martyr’s Shrine is located on this hill. The hill reaches a height of about 430 meters above sea level and from a distance it looks like a rounded peak, thus it was given the name Yuanshan.
Yuanshan Park is located on the foothills below the Martyr’s Shrine. Within the gardens you can find an auditorium, a children’s playground, a fish pond and a hot springs water slide. It also contains a hiking trail developed by the Japanese Gentry which takes you around the mountain or to the Martyr’s Shrine.
The park reflects the footprints of history. Among the repertoire presented in the open-roof auditorium, Taiwanese Opera is the centerpiece. As a cradle of Taiwanese Opera, Yuanshan is a place with a rich cultural heritage.

Kavalan Whisky
Kavalan Whisky by Jinche Distillery was officially introduced in December, 2008. Water is a key to whisky quality. Situated close to the mountains and the sea, 75% of Yilan is hilly. Yilan, seen as a big natural reservoir, provides ample clean water and becomes a perfect place for distilling quality whisky. With such purity of water from the high mountains, it is inevitable that the Jinche Distillery is able to create very fine Kavalan Whisky, which is smooth to the palate and is clean tasting with a lingering finish.
Research teams from Jinche went to Scotland and Japan to learn about the manufacturing processes. They have also toured around the world to look for the stills used by the famous distilleries in an effort to make the first authentic whisky in Taiwan.
In 1812, the Qing Court established an administrative office, temples, and schools centered near today’s Yilan Hospital. In 1895, after the Japanese took over, the center for administration, education, finance, and transportation shifted southward to the outskirts of the old Yilan City. The area stretched from today’s Yilan Railway Station to the Yilan Winery running along the edge of the old city moat, forming a crescent shape. However, due to an ever changing society, and modifications in urban planning, the original moat and buildings were either covered, renovated, dismantled, or abandoned. In 2005, via a Yilan County Government revival project, this area was renovated, wherein explanatory signs were also erected, giving the historical areas within the crescent section new life. The aim of this project is to include the old sites as part of modern life, creating a new city image that is both classic and modern, so as to shine like a new moon over a new Yilan City which is both modern and classic.
Jia Zi Lan Wine Museum (Yilan Winery Museum)
Yilan Winery was established in 1909 by Lin, Cing-Yun, a local businessmen. Because of its early establishment, the Yilan Winery has preserved quite a few artifacts concerning the local government and the wine manufacturing industry. The old city gates, the winery square, the auditorium, the warehouse, and the offices within the winery complex are all important relics leftover from the Japanese Occupational Period. Walking in the compound is like walking back in time. To meet the needs of a changing business, the Yilan Winery was later renamed Jia Zih Lan Wine Museum, primarily producing Red Dew Wine.
Songluo National Trail
Songluo National Trail winds up along the Songluo River, about 15-minute drive from Yulan Recreational Tea Garden. The 2-kilometer path is converted from a former hunting route developed by the Taiya Tribe. It takes about two hours for a round-trip stroll. Officially opened to the public since June 2003, the forest trail is quite popular, attracting huge numbers of visitors on weekends and holidays.
Taiping Mountain Forest Recreation Area
Taiping Mountain is located in Datong Township, Yilan County, covering 12,631 hectares of land at 2000 meters above sea level, formerly known as “Rest Brain”, which means greenish, rich in trees, and thriving. From the top of Taiping Mountain, there is an unparalleled vista of forest and mountain scenery. As visitors ascend, they first pass through an area of camphor and maple trees at the 200 to 500 meter level. From 500 to 1,800 meters is the temperate zone, with coniferous and broad-leafed trees such as fir, juniper and maple, while the area above 1,800 meters is known for its lush growth of coniferous trees, including cypress and juniper, whose wood is commercially valuable. There are four national trails running through the forest, namely Hemlock, Maoxing, Cuifeng Lake, and Beech.
Another big draw at Taiping Mountain is Taiping Mountain Forest Railway. Originally constructed in 1924 for the logging industry, this 2.5-kilometer narrow gauge rail line runs through the forest from Taiping Mountain Visitor Center to Maoxing. Renovated in 1991, the cliff-side route features Bong Bong Trains, taking visitors to Maoxing Fern Garden.
Renze Hot Springs
Another popular spot for visitors to Taiping Mountain are the hot springs at Renze. Situated 500 meters above sea level, Renze Hot Springs are a stopover on the road to Taiping Mountain Forest Recreation Area. The colorless, odorless mineral water here contains calcium carbonate and is very hot--frequently above 95 degrees Celsius. Bathing in the springs leaves the skin lustrous and smooth. Visitors here can also enjoy walking on nearby forest paths and watching the birds.
Fuente termal Tsio Zu Tser (antigua fuente termal Tsen Tser)
Taiwanese Opera
The opera is said to begin at Yilan in late Qing Dynasty. Its earliest form adopted elements of five si(s) (meaning operas), including Hakka tea-picking si, luan tan si, che gu si, Siping si , and Beijing si. These five operas also show their influences on its repertoires, music, costumes, and body movements. Its singing in Taiwanese is combined with the operatic form of Chinese operas. It is recorded that Taiwanese Opera is the only opera born in Taiwan and now continues to be a favorite folk art in Taiwan.
Shuanglianpi Wildlife Conservation Park
The park set in a mountainous wetland is on the midway to Fushan Botanical Garden. Shuangpi means two lakes, for which the park is named as such. Fog shrouds the park, hides surrounding mountains, and makes you think you are wandering in clouds. Once in a while, wind blows away the mist, the air is fresh, the sky is clear, and hilly mountains suddenly appear in front of you. The pebble-paved trail around the lake is dotted by seedling and vegetable gardens, contrasting with firs at the far end.
The big lake is 500m in length, and 300m in width, while the small lake is 200m in length and 100m in width. Due to the build-up of sediments, the lakes have virtually turned into swamps. The park houses one third of water plant species, outnumbering any other park in Taiwan. And a fish once considered extinct for 70 years has been found again in the lake. The water of the lakes flows west, a unique pattern in local hydrology. Shuanglianpi has been designated as a wildlife conservation park.
